Today we remember the life of Nelson Mandela — born 95 years ago in a country that considered him a second class citizen, he died today one of the most respected statesmen in the world. 
Mandela became a legendary figure during his years of imprisonment, and in his memoirs he worried that the legend would obscure his true self.  Cape Town native Sean Jacobs, who blogs at Africa is a Country, compiled a reading list for us earlier this year to help people understand both the myth and the man:

Since Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 the myths and stories about him have grown, through many narratives constructed by journalists and the numerous films made about him and the many books written about his life. But these three, I think, provide a good introduction to this remarkable man, who always insisted that he was part of a larger struggle and a movement.
